Lauren F. Winner, Wearing God: Clothing, Laughter, Fire and Other Overlooked Ways of Meeting God

Episcopal priest, scholar and author Lauren Winner returns to UCUCC in March to give the sermon during service on Sunday, March 29, 2015 followed by lunch in Ostrander Hall and a book talk and discussion from 12:30 - 2 p.m. Suggested donation is $15/pay what you can. More about the book: There are hundreds of metaphors for God, but the church only uses a few familiar images: creator, judge, savior, father. In Wearing God, Lauren Winner gathers a number of lesser-known tropes, reflecting on how they work biblically and culturally, and reveals how they can deepen our spiritual lives. Exploring the notion of God as clothing, Winner reflects on how we are "clothed in Christ" or how "God fits us like a garment." She considers how clothing functions culturally to shape our ideals and identify our community, and ruminates on how this new metaphor can function to create new possibilities for our lives. For each biblical metaphor—God as the vine/vintner who animates life; the lactation consultant; and the comedian, showing us our follies, for example—Winner surveys the historical, literary and cultural landscapes in order to revive and heal our souls.

Lauren Winner is a leading writer at the crossroads of culture and spiritually, joining the ranks of luminaries such as Anne Lamott and Barbara Brown Taylor. This book is an exploration of little known—and, so, little used—biblical metaphors for God, metaphors can open new doorways for our lives and spiritualties.

Marcus Borg: A Service of Memory and Thanksgiving
Sunday, March 29, 2015, 3 p.m.

Beloved teacher, author, scholar and friend, Marcus Borg died peacefully at his home in Eastern Oregon on the morning of January 21, 2015. He was a special friend of ours at UCUCC, spending a week with us at Seabeck summer camp 18 years ago, and coming back often to lecture and read from his books. Marcus was an important guide and spiritual beacon for many of us as we sought to understand what it means to be Christian today. Please join us for this service of memory and thanksgiving. A reception will precede the service at 2 p.m.

Do you have a special memory of Marcus, or story of how he changed your thinking? Please share your thoughts with others by emailing them to Betty Spieth-Croll at Comments will be posted here.
